The Ultimate Easter Food and Wine Matchmaker

Easter is one of those rare moments in the year where time slows down — at least a little. It’s a chance to gather with the people you love, enjoy a few long meals, and (let’s be honest) indulge in all kinds of treats you might not normally go for. Whether you’re hosting or bringing a bottle to share, it’s always nice to have a wine that actually works with what’s on the table.

But with so many different dishes across the Easter weekend — Good Friday seafood, Sunday roasts, hot cross buns, and all the chocolate eggs — it can be tricky knowing what to choose.

So we’ve put together this guide to help you pair wines with your Easter menu, whatever’s on it.

Let’s get into it.

🐟 Good Friday Seafood & What to Pour

Seafood is a classic for Good Friday, and there are loads of great options depending on what you're cooking. The key thing to keep in mind is how the fish is prepared.

  • If you're grilling or baking fish with lemon, herbs, or olive oil, go for a lean, unoaked Chardonnay or a dry Riesling. They’ll match the freshness without overpowering the dish.

  • Fried or more richly flavoured seafood? A lightly oaked Chardonnay or even a textural Pinot Gris can handle the extra weight.

  • And if you’re doing a seafood spread — prawns, oysters, smoked fish — you really can’t go wrong with Prosecco or a good Pét-Nat.

🍞 Hot Cross Buns & Sparkling Mornings

Hot cross buns are a very welcome Easter tradition (and, let’s be honest, they start showing up weeks before Easter actually arrives).

Pairing wine with them might not be the first thing you think of — but it should be.

  • Try a dry Australian sparkling wine with your morning bun on Easter Sunday. It’s celebratory, it’s zippy, and it cuts beautifully through the spice and fruit.

  • Want something a little more old-school? A glass of dry sherry (like an Amontillado) brings out the cinnamon and raisin notes and works especially well if you're sneaking one as a late-night snack on the couch.

🍖 The Easter Sunday Roast Line-Up

For many, Easter Sunday is all about the roast. Roast lamb tends to be the hero, but beef or even a rich mushroom dish might be on the table too. These dishes call for wines with a bit of structure — something that can stand up to all that richness without stealing the show.

  • Cabernet Sauvignon is a go-to for lamb, especially with its natural herbal/minty edge. It’s kind of like mint jelly, but way more elegant.

  • You could also reach for a Tempranillo (great with savoury sides), a cool-climate Shiraz, or a Nebbiolo if you want something a bit more lifted and aromatic.

  • Feeling festive? A vintage sparkling rosé is a bit unexpected, but it works beautifully — especially if you’re keeping things lighter or serving lunch outdoors.

🥕 Sides, Sides, Sides

The thing with Easter is, the sides are often just as exciting as the main dish. Cheesy gratins, roasted pumpkin, fresh salads, honey-glazed carrots — the works.

  • For a spread like this, you want something versatile. Prosecco or a Crémant (like our Saumur Brut Cuvée de la Chevalerie) is a great palate refresher.

  • For veggie-heavy plates, go for Sauvignon Blanc or Riesling — both have the acidity to cut through sweeter or greener flavours like asparagus or carrot.

  • If you’re not sure what’s being served (or you're bringing a bottle to a friend's), choose a flexible all-rounder: Grenache, off-dry Riesling, Pinot Gris, or a dry Rosé all do the trick without clashing with the food.

🍫 Chocolate & Wine (A Love Story)

It wouldn’t be Easter without a bit (or a lot) of chocolate — and the right wine can make it even better.

Two bottles we love for pairing:

  • Il Viziato is a soft, fruit-forward blend of Sangiovese and Nero d’Avola that works beautifully with milk chocolate. The red fruit and spice balance the sweetness and bring a little elegance to your Easter eggs.

  • Villa Mangiacane Chianti Classico 2021 is our go-to for dark chocolate. It’s rich, structured, and savoury — perfect with high-cocoa treats that need something bold alongside them.

Who says Easter eggs are just for kids?

Wrapping It Up

Whether you’re hosting the whole weekend or just bringing a bottle to share, Easter is a great excuse to explore new pairings and make the most of a few relaxed meals.

If you're not sure where to start, we're always happy to help you pick out something special — or something that works with a little bit of everything.

Wishing you a warm, delicious, wine-filled Easter from all of us at WMWM.
